Nitrianske Rudno is a water reservoir in the Prievidza district on the upper reaches of the Nitrica River, in the outcrop of the Hornonitrian basin at the foot of the Strážovské vrchy. It is known to many tourists, fishermen and holidaymakers since ancient times as a favorite holiday and recreation destination .

It is located in the Rudnian basin between the villages of Nitrianske Rudno, Rudnianske Lehota and Kostolna Ves . The water reservoir was built in 1951-58 with a flooded area of ​​89.7 hectares. The water area has an area of ​​0.96 km2, max. Length 1.46 km, max. Width 0,6 km, max. Depth 13.5 m. The water tank serves the needs of the Nováky and NCHZ thermal power plants.

In the summer months it is used for recreational purposes for our and foreign tourists and is a paradise for sports fishermen . They are mainly for swimming , yachting , fishing and water sports . Close to the water area there are a number of accommodation facilities that offer quality food service and a good fun. For the less demanding there is camping .

Nature of the water reservoir

In relation to the dam, attention is paid to aquatic animals , the fishing value of the tank increases the occurrence of carp, pickle and catfish .

Tank and adjacent wetlands are a suitable environment for waterless invertebrates , especially dragonflies, mosquitoes, pediment boats, batons and the like. Directly in the tank there is an extraordinary occurrence of the pond trough .

The coastal vegetation of the water reservoir consists of luscious communities , especially grasses. It is a species of very varied family of plants. The rich and varied flower meadow along with the decoration of the meadows and the sign of a healthy environment are butterflies .

Waterfowl are an inseparable part of a dam lake. The amount of food attracts especially wild duck , greens and dicks . The extensive water area is of special importance to migrated birds , offering a place for rest during the spring and autumn movements . For a few days, fishermen , marshmallows , even gulls can stop here; the whole season can be seen on the lake with swans , herons and marshmallows .

The village Nitrianske Rudno is part of the cadastre of the protected bird area Strážovské vrchy and Rokoš National Nature Reserve. These sites of European importance are important for maintaining the favorable status of populations of selected animal species , plants and habitat conservation . The systematic protection of the most rarest and most endangered wild plants, wildlife and natural habitats contributes to the construction of the Nitrianske Rudno Water Reservoir and the effort to seek to integrate the sites into the NATURA 2000 network of protected areas of the European Union .
