Domina Tatarka does not forget the natives

An important native of the region is the writer Dominik Tatarko. He saw the light of the world in the village Plevnik-Drienová and grew up in one of the most important representatives of Slovak literature. In his native village his lifelong work regularly worships.

Dominik Tatarka was born 14 March 1913 in Drien as the penultimate of the seven children and as the only son. He graduated from elementary school in Plevnik, graduated from high school in Trenčín. In the next study he continued to study at the Charles University in Prague and the Sorbonne in Paris. Literature began to work before World War II. His work is marked by super-realism, rejection of schematics and ideological negativism. In his works he presents personal experiences and an attempt to analyze the characteristics of his characters and solve social and individual problems. He also wrote several film scenarios.

"We have the elementary school named after him, we have set up the memorial room of Dominika Tatarka, we organize an all-Slovak literary contest under his name every year. This year was held the 15th year on the occasion of the 104th anniversary of the birth of our prominent native. We are proud that such a great Slovakian history was born in our country, and I believe that our citizens are also proud of it, "Miroslav Kremeň, Mayor of Drien, said.

Tatarka, however, was not easy in his life. When he left the Communist Party of Czechoslovakia in 1969, two years later he was removed from the list of members of the Union of Slovak Writers. He was persecuted by the regime, and his works were downloaded from libraries. Nevertheless he kept in touch with the dissident movement, published in samizdate and as one of the few Slovaks signed Charter 77. He died on 10 May 1989 in Bratislava. In memoriam he won the National Prize of the Slovak Republic, the Radius of Tomáš Garrigue Masaryk of the 1st Class, and in 1995 the President of the Slovak Republic, Michal Kováč, awarded the State Prize of the People's Class of the First Class. Since 1994 he has been awarded the Dominique Tatarka Prize, which the writer can only get once in a lifetime.
